Knockvologan Beach & Erraid

Acres of sand at low tide and access to the tidal island of Erraid make Knockvologan Beach a great choice for a day out exploring.

Take the road past Fidden and continue to Knockvologan Farm where it ends. There is restricted parking at the farm, take care not to block any access, then walk down the track to the beach and the Isle of Erraid.

At low tide there are acres of sandy beaches to explore. For those with time and inclination it is well worth a walk to the south side of Erraid to a beautiful sandy bay known as David Balfour’s Bay (Traigh Gheal) named after the character David Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Kidnapped”.

From Balfour’s Bay it is worth exploring the Erraid coast to the north, with lovely views of the small islands in the Sound of Iona and to the Isle of Iona itself. From the higher ground there are views of the Burg and Ben More and north to the Rum Cuillin.

It is important to remember that Erraid is tidal so be sure to leave enough time to return to Knockvologan without getting wet feet!
